There are many names for the Ananse character, such as Annancy, Anancy, Anancyi, Ananansa, Ananse, Anansi Drew, Aunt Nancy, Cha Nanzi, Hanansi, Kompa Nanzi, Pablo Barnansi, Compé Anansi, Kwaku Anansi, Nansi, Anansiil, B’anansi, Ayiyi, Kacou Ananzè. IN West Africa, he is Ananse or Anansi, which means "spider" In Jamaica, he is Anancy. In the American South, Aunt Nancy is an old woman. In Native American cultures she is Spiderwoman and appears in several tribes mythology. In the Lakota and the Cherokee she is the creator of the dream catcher.

In different cultures, the Ananse character can be a man, a woman, or a spider.

These tales were first told orally but since have been sritten. They still play a large part in the Akan culture.
In different tales, Ananse is sued as an example of both how to behave and how not to behave.
